Basics
of Organizational GHG Accounting (Now Open!)
| Description: |
Many companies and other organizations
are taking action to manage their greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions that are a cause of climate change. Starting
with an inventory of their sources and emissions (e.g.,
carbon footprint) is an essential first step to assessing
risks, reducing emissions, and tracking performance.
This training course will cover the basics of GHG accounting
for organizations. The course materials are based on
the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, while
referring to the ISO 14064:Part 1 international standard
for GHG inventories. The material taught in this course
serves as the basis for almost all of the entity-level
GHG reporting programs in the world, such as:
• Carbon Disclosure Project
• U.S. EPA Climate Leaders
• U.S. DOE/EIA 1605(b) program
• The Climate Registry
• The California Climate Action Registry
• The Chicago Climate Exchange
• Mexico GHG Program
• Philippine GHG Accounting & Reporting Program
The course includes quizzes and exercises to help you
learn to apply key lessons.
A Certificate of Participation is included as part of
the course. A Certificate of Proficiency is available
for an additional fee and requires the passing of an
exam after completion of the course.
Key concepts covered include:
• GHG accounting principles
• Defining applications for GHG inventories
• Designing and development of GHG inventories,
• Establishing GHG boundaries for an organization,
• Identifying emission sources,
• Tracking emissions over time, recalculations,
and establishing a base year,
• Setting GHG reduction targets,
• Inventory quality management,
• Preparing a GHG inventory report, and
• Preparing for verification.
Who should attend:
Anyone with an interest in GHG management and in particular
GHG inventory managers, corporate environmental and
sustainability managers, investors, and auditors. For
example, a client says he wants his company to be “carbon
neutral” and you are asked to help them understand
their carbon footprint. This course will enable you
to intelligently address the issues necessary assess
this organization’s GHG emissions.

Setting
Up a GHG Information System for Corporations and Organizations
(Now Open!)
| Description: |
Many companies are taking action to manage
their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are a cause
of climate change. Establishing a GHG Information Management
System is a critical and valuable step towards reducing
staff burdens associated with carbon footprinting, institutionalizing
processes, enhancing data quality, streamlining reporting,
and increasing analytical robustness.
The training course for setting up a GHG Information
Management System includes:
• A step-by-step process to outline key requirements
for data collection, data quality, analysis, and reporting.
• Details on how to best utilize existing data
systems.
• Outlines steps towards successful integration
of data.
• Provides numerous case studies from existing
systems for key challenges such as data collection,
quality assurance, and creating corporate transparency.
The material in this course builds on the WRI-WBCSD
GHG Corporate Protocol and related guidance.
A Certificate of Participation is included in course.
A Certificate of Proficiency is available for additional
fee and requires the passing of an exam.
Key concepts covered include:
• Linking data management to corporate ghg inventory
accounting
• Defining data system requirements, including
data collection, quality assurance, analysis, and reporting
• Identifying opportunities to connect data systems
• Addressing uncertainties associated with estimating
techniques or data gaps
Who should attend:
Anyone with an interest in GHG management and in particular
GHG inventory managers, corporate environmental and
sustainability managers, investors, auditors.

Project- level
accounting
| Courses for those
interested in working on projects that reduce greenhouse
gas emissions through the implementation of specific measures.
Such projects are a central element of carbon markets
and typically produce what are referred to as “credits”
or “carbon offsets”. |
|
|
| |
|
| Core Overview |
|
Basics
of Project-level Accounting (Now Open!)
| Description: |
Many companies are doing special projects
or developing new technologies to reduce or avoid greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions that cause climate change. These
GHG projects are a way to reduce the overall emissions
of a company or to create tradable credits that other
companies can buy to offset emissions in order to become
carbon neutral.
Training courses for GHG projects:
• the training materials present fundamental knowledge,
interpretation and practice for the application of standards,
protocols and other tools to quantify and manage GHG
projects.
• the materials are based on the ISO 14064-2 International
Standard for GHG Projects and WRI-WBCSD GHG Project
Protocol, which are the generally accepted GHG accounting
rules for voluntary markets.
• the materials describe major GHG project programs,
including policies, eligibility criteria and major issues.
• includes worked examples, quizzes, and case
studies
• Certificate of participation is included in
course
• Certificate of proficiency is available for
additional fee and requires the passing of an exam
Key concepts covered include:
• identifying relevant GHG sources and primary
GHG affects for quantification and monitoring,
• techniques for identifying and selecting the
baseline scenario,
• quantifying emissions and emission reductions,
• developing the procedures,
• documentation and management system to support
the project and prepare for validation and verification.
Who should attend:
Anyone with an interest in GHG management and in particular
GHG project developers, corporate environmental and
sustainability managers, investors, auditors.
