The Greenhouse Gas Management Institute is establishing Professional
Programs ("Programs") designed to assemble requirements
to qualify GHG practitioners for a specialized body of knowledge.
The Institute is currently developing the following Professional
Programs for individual accreditations:
1. GHG Management Program for GHG Practitioners
2. GHG Program for Validators/Verifiers
3. GHG Management Program for Business Professionals
4. GHG Management for Public Administrators
5. GHG Management Program for Project Managers
The Professional Programs are scheduled to begin in Q3 2008.
| GHG Management Program for GHG Accounting Experts |
This Program is offered in three levels.
The Level 1 Program consists of the following courses:
• Basics course in Organizational GHG Accounting
• Basics course in Project-level GHG Accounting
• Setting up a GHG information system for Organizations
The Level 1 Program offers a “Basics of GHG Accounting”
Certificate of Training following the passing of exams associated
with all courses.
The Level 2 Program consists of the following courses:
• Level 1 Program or equivalent
• Advanced course in Organizational GHG Accounting
• Advanced course in Project-level GHG Accounting
• One cross-cutting or sector-specific course (a course
from another category may be substituted with permission of
the Dean)
The Level-2 Program offers an “Advanced GHG Accounting”
Certificate of Training following the passing of exams associated
with all courses.
The Level 3 Program consists of the following courses:
• Level 1 Program or equivalent
• Advanced course in Organizational GHG Accounting
• Advanced course in Project-level GHG Accounting
• Product GHG Footprint Accounting
• Supply Chain GHG Accounting
• Analyzing footprint data and assessing mitigation
opportunities in supply chain
• GHG Accounting for Stationary Combustion
• GHG Accounting for Mobile Combustion
• GHG accounting for purchased energy
• One additional elective course (excluding “Basics”
courses)
In addition to completing the above courses, the following
requirements must be satisfied to be accredited as a GHG Management
Professional:
• Two (2) years of continuous GHG experience in the
last four (4) years
• Completion of 60 days of GHG experience in the year
prior to certification
Decisions regarding the completion of this requirement will
be made by the Accreditation subcommittee of the Professional
Programs Committee. |
| GHG Management Program for GHG Validators/Verifiers |
This program offers successful graduates an accreditation
as a GHG Validation/Verification Professional.
The Program consists of the following courses:
• Advanced Course in Organizational Inventory GHG Accounting
• Advanced Course in Project GHG Accounting
• Verification of Organizational GHG Inventories
• Validation of GHG Projects
• Verification of GHG Projects
In addition to completing the above courses, the following
requirements must be satisfied to be accredited:
• Two (2) years of continuous GHG experience in the
last four (4) years
• Completion of 60 days of GHG experience in the year
prior to certification
• Training as an auditing professional (e.g. ISO 9000,
ISO 14000, EMAS, others)
Decisions regarding the completion of this requirement will
be made by the Accreditation subcommittee of the Professional
Programs Committee. |
| GHG Management Program for Business Professionals |
This program offers successful graduates an accreditation
as a GHG Business Professional.
The Program consists of the following courses:
• Advanced Course in Organizational Inventory GHG Accounting
• Advanced Course in Project GHG Accounting
• A Carbon Disclosure Project course
• Climate MBA Course 1
• Climate MBA Course 2
• Climate MBA Course 3
In addition to completing the above courses, the following
requirements must be satisfied to be accredited:
• Completion of 20 days of GHG experience in the year
prior to certification
Decisions regarding the completion of this requirement will
be made by the Accreditation subcommittee of the Professional
Programs Committee. |
| GHG Management for Public Administrators |
This program offers successful graduates an accreditation
as a GHG Public Administration Professional.
The Program consists of the following courses
• Advanced Course in Organizational Inventory GHG Accounting
• Advanced Course in Project GHG Accounting
• Setting Up and Managing a GHG Reporting Program
In addition to completing the above courses, the following
requirements must be satisfied to be offered accreditation:
• Completion of 20 days of GHG experience in the year
prior to certification
• Two (2) years in the last four (4) years in a relevant
public (government or advisory) function
Decisions regarding the completion of this requirement will
be made by the Accreditation subcommittee of the Professional
Programs Committee. |

Management Program for Project Managers |
This program offers successful graduates an accreditation
as a GHG Project Manager.
The Program consists of the following courses
• Level 1 Program or equivalent
• Advanced Course in Organizational Inventory GHG Accounting
• Advanced Course in Project GHG Accounting
• Additional four (4) courses from:
o Product GHG Footprint Accounting
o Supply Chain GHG Accounting
o Analyzing footprint data and assessing mitigation opportunities
in supply chain
o Setting Up and Managing a GHG Reporting Program
o Verification of Organizational GHG Inventories
o Validation of GHG Projects
o Verification of GHG Projects
In addition to completing the above courses, the following
requirements must be satisfied to be accredited:
• Completion of 20 days of GHG experience in the year
prior to certification
• Project Management Professional Certification from
PMI or similar accreditation
Decisions regarding the completion of this requirement will
be made by the Accreditation subcommittee of the Professional
Programs Committee.

Professional Programs Committee
Committee Terms of Reference:
The
Committee will be supported by the GHG Management Institute Secretariat.
The Committee is open to those that have demonstrated, through practice,
a high level of professional excellence. New Committee members will
be appointed through a voting process by existing Committee members.
Tom Baumann, Director of Professional Programs at the GHG Management
Institute, will serve as the Committee Chair. Michael Gillenwater,
Dean of the GHG Management Institute, will serve as Vice-Chair.
The following members of the GHG Management Institute's Advisory
Board form the Professional Programs Committee to guide the development
of the Professional Programs of the GHG Management Institute.
The Committee will include a maximum of 12 members representing
different stakeholder interest groups and regional representation
who will serve for a one (1) year term, with a potential one (1)
year extension, upon invitation of the chair and there are not more
than 2 objections from current members. The Committee members will
participate in a teleconference scheduled quarterly.
